With 15 years of experience working in theatre, Andrew Cleveland is a costume designer, and costume maker born in Mississauga, Ontario. He has studied costume design in Stratford, with the Off the Wall Stratford Artists Alliance, and has a B.F.A. in Theatre from York University, graduating with honours in 2013.
After working on two seasons of Dream in High Park with Canadian Stage, Andrew was invited to job shadow on the Pre-Broadway production of Disney’s Aladdin in Toronto. In addition to this, Andrew was asked to work on two other productions of Aladdin for both London’s WestEnd and in Sydney. Puppets made by Andrew appeared in the Shanghai Grand Theatre’s production of The Lion King. These puppets were later featured around the world, appearing in Lion King productions in Manila, Singapore, Daegu, Seoul, Busan, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Auckland, and Abu Dhabi.
Andrew has also worked as a dresser for the National Tours of Alvin and the Chipmunks: LIVE, Theatre Aquarius' Main Stage production of Mary Poppins, Rogers’ and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Sam Mendes’ Cabaret, and the Canadian Opera Company. Further more, Andrew also had the chance to do a work call on the National Touring production of Wicked in Toronto. As a costumer, Cleveland’s first Broadway show he worked on was the Tony Award winning musical Come From Away.
Cleveland worked for Opéra Atelier for four years working on productions for the Elgin Theatre, l’opera Royal de Versailles, and at the Bata Shoe Museum, in addition, he worked on the opening ceremonies of the 2015 PanAm Games, with Cirque du Soleil. With Mirvish, he worked on the Original Toronto productions of Kinky Boots and Mrs. Henderson Presents. He has designed costumes for multiple community theatres, The Toronto Fringe Festival, Talk is Free Theatre, Hart House Theatre, The Royal Conservatory, Koerner Hall, Nuit Blanche, as well as Theatre Orangeville’s Drama, and Musical Young Company.
In 2009, Andrew co-wrote, and starred in his high school production of Mailfunction, which earned him The Exploring the Arts award in his graduation year. Andrew is also the recipient of two Arts and Culture awards for Student Artist and Emerging Artist of the Year from his home town of Orangeville, ON. He was nominated for an Association of Community Theatre’s - Central Ontario (ACT-CO THEA Award), for best costume design of a musical, jointly winning a THEA Award for best musical production for Spring Awakening (Theatre Aurora) in 2017. He received three BroadwayWorld Toronto Award nominations for designing costumes for: The Original Toronto Production of Carrie: The Musical (Heart House Theatre, People Choice Award nomination), Leonard Bernstein’s Candide (Talk is Free Theatre), as well as the fringe show All of Me (Toronto Fringe Festival). Andrew also had a bit role in Canadian Stage’s production of The inheritance Part 2, which was nominated for several Dora Awards. Additionally, Andrew’s work was featured in the 2011 and 2015 Prague Quadrennial in the Czechia. Andrew is a proud donor to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
